How Do We Teach Our Children To Become More Emotionally Intelligent?
The sad thing about parenting today is that research quoted in Daniel Goleman's book "Emotional Intelligence" shows that in the USA the level of EQ is declining with each generation. The only way to develop this vital intelligence in your children is to be a glowing example of it oneself. Children learn by example and this is especially true of emotional habits. It would be highly unrealistic to expect that emotional retards could raise children with a healthy level of EQ.
But by putting oneself on this life path, children will learn a healthy level of these skills. Here the emotional dictionary in my book is useful. Both parent and child can simultaneously learn to understand their emotions and work with their life choices. This can also be combined with John Gottman's work "The Heart of Parenting" where parents are taught to become emotional coaches in their children's lives.
